It's never ending!!
It's 2 steps forward 3 steps back -constantly!
Thought i was getting better now i feel feverish again =(
I just want to get well and go to the bleeding gym!

The thermometer is actually a marvel of vintage technology. Though it is basically a mercury thermometer that makes use of the thermal expansion of materials whereby a relative large volume is communicating with a small tube with a scale. Mercury is a metal that is liquid at room temperature. If the material expands inside the bulb that is the probe tip, it will be forced inside the tube. The internal volume of the tube is much smaller then the internal volume of the probe tip. Therefore it is possible to visualise very small thermal expansions. What makes this thermometer spacial is that is is a so called maximum peak read out thermometer. This is done by making a sharp s curve at the bottom of the tube. Mercury can be forced up, but the impedance of the curve prevents it to retract when the temperature drops. This is because the force is the pressure differential times tube cross section surface area is neglect-able. Therefor you have to shake it versus the tip to reset the reading after it has rolled down.

Note: This thermometer is now illegal because eco tyrants have caused mercury to be outlawed. However energy saving lamps are in reality mercury vapour lamps. So now we have a much increased mercury risk in our house then in the time of this instrument.
